Over time, many people, ideas, and goods have come to Cairo, Egypt. These things have shaped its culture in many different ways. One of the first people to come to Cairo was Alexander the Great. He took control over Egypt using his military in 332 BC and brought Greek rule and culture to Egypt.
Next came the Roman Empire in 31 AD. Because of religious differences between the Coptic Christians in Egypt and the Romans, Copts had to face religious persecution. Yet, the Muslims invaded in 642 AD, bringing the idea of Islam to Cairo, Egypt. By the eighth century, Egypt was largely Muslim.
After the completion of the Suez Canal in 1869, Britain increased its control over Egypt. Then in 1914, it made Egypt a protectorate. Now in present day, it has many important trading partners including the US, Italy, Germany, and France. Two-fifths of their imports are raw materials, minerals and chemical products, and capital goods, and one-fifth are foodstuffs. The remainder of the imports are other consumer goods. About half of the exports are petroleum/petroleum products, raw cotton, cotton yarn, and fabrics.
